Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that the Israeli Air Force carried out two airstrikes on a village in southern Lebanon on Monday morning, killing at least nine people and injuring several others, including women and children. These strikes occurred amidst a new phase of tension between Israel and the militant Hezbollah group, even though a ceasefire had been in place for over two months. The attacks came just days after the Israeli military claimed “operational control” over the strategically vital ‘Ali Tahir’ hill—a key vantage point overlooking several villages and the main roads leading to the city of Nabatieh. The Health Ministry stated that one of the strikes hit a building, killing eight people, including a child and two women. The ministry also reported 11 injuries, including four children and two women. It further noted that a second strike on a car in the village killed a paramedic from the Lebanese Islamic Risala Scout Association and injured two others. Standing in front of the ruined building, Kfar Roummane resident Fouad Chakroun said, “We are living in constant anxiety amidst the shelling occurring on the outskirts.” “Now, they have struck right in the middle of the town.” Another resident, Saleh Medlej, pointed to the destroyed building and said that families with children lived there. Referring to the residential building, he asked, “Are there missiles here?” Medlej declared, “I will not leave this place,” resolving to stay in his hometown despite the airstrikes and shelling. Earlier on Monday, the Israeli military had issued a warning to evacuate a house in the village of Deir al-Zahrani; shortly thereafter, a building was struck. No casualties were reported in that incident. On Sunday, at least seven people were killed and an empty hospital was completely destroyed in Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon. The US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been repeatedly violated; Israel has conducted airstrikes in Lebanon, while Hezbollah has launched drone attacks on Israeli troops. In June, Lebanon and Israel signed a US-brokered framework agreement requiring the Israeli military to withdraw from southern Lebanon in exchange for Hezbollah laying down its arms, but little progress has been made toward its implementation. Hezbollah is not part of the negotiations between Lebanon and Israel and has stated that it will not relinquish its weapons in any area north of the Litani River in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, Israeli officials maintain that they will not withdraw until Hezbollah’s weapons are removed from the entire country.
