Nishamani Borah, a daughter of Assam, once again brought honor to the national sports arena. At the 2026 All India National Sailing Championship held in Goa, Nishamani won the silver medal. This courageous athlete from Sorupathar represented Assam in the ‘IQ Foil Windsurfing Women’s’ category of this mega competition held from April 13 to April 17. Braving the sea while windsurfing, Nishamani has reaffirmed her position as the first female sailor from the Northeast.Nishamani’s sports journey began through NCC, born in a farmer’s family in Dochuk village of Sarupathar. She became attracted to this adventurous sport after receiving advice from an observer of windsurfing at the NCC camp. Starting her training in 2023 at Umiam Lake in Meghalaya, within a very short time she was able to compete at the national level and then with other international-level players. By winning the gold medal at the ‘Rising Sun Water Festival’ held at Deepor Bil in 2023, she made history as the first female sailor from Northeast India.
It is noteworthy that Nishamani has been able to win several gold and bronze medals, from the Bepur International Water Festival held in Kerala to the Chennai Kite Boarding Championship. Nishamani, the only daughter of Bipul Bora and Runu Bora, has not only obtained a bachelor’s degree from Sarupathar College but also earned the NCC Senior ‘C’ Certificate. By waving the Assamese pride cloth in the lap of the sea, Nishamani’s achievements have now inspired a new enthusiasm in the state’s sports sector.
