Bhutanese law allows citizens to marry foreigners, provided both parties freely consent and comply with the country’s marriage regulations.
Under the Marriage Bill, marriage is permitted regardless of religion, sex, social status, caste, wealth or appearance. Foreign spouses may apply to live in Bhutan and, subject to legal requirements, may eventually seek citizenship. However, marriage to a Bhutanese citizen does not automatically confer citizenship. Foreign spouses must follow Bhutanese laws and face certain restrictions on political participation and some government services.
Bhutanese citizenship rules also impose additional requirements on children of mixed-nationality couples, while the country does not generally recognise dual citizenship.
