The Department of Pathology at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong, earned international recognition after faculty members secured top awards at the 7th South Asian Academy of Cytopathology and Histopathology Conference held in Paro, Bhutan, from April 21 to 23, 2026.
Dr. Biswajit Dey, Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology, won the First Prize in the oral paper presentation category for his research titled “Clinicopathological profile and molecular classification of muscle invasive bladder cancer based on a simplified panel of immunohistochemistry.”
Dr. Naveen Kumar, Assistant Professor in the same department, secured the Second Prize in the oral presentation category for his study on “Molecular profiling and clinicopathological association of endometrial carcinomas presenting at a tertiary care institute of Northeast India.”
Both award-winning studies are part of NEIGRIHMS’ ongoing cancer research initiatives focusing on molecular profiling of cancers prevalent in Northeast India. The studies highlight the increasing role of molecular pathology and immunohistochemistry in cancer classification, prognosis, and personalised treatment strategies.
NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. Nalin Mehta congratulated the faculty members on their achievements at the international conference, stating that the recognition reflects the institute’s commitment to advancing cancer research, molecular studies, and academic excellence.
He added that such accomplishments further strengthen NEIGRIHMS’ academic presence and contribution within South Asia.
The awardees also expressed gratitude to Senior Professor Vandana Raphael, Head of the Department of Pathology, for her guidance, encouragement, and for fostering a supportive academic and research environment that contributed to the successful completion and presentation of the studies.
